Grow Your Own Garlic Greens

1 garlic bulb (ideally one with green sprouts)

1 clear, shallow jar or cup or a small bowl

Water

Scissors

Put the garlic bulb in the clear jar so that you can see when the water needs changing or refilling.  Arrange   it so that the points of the cloves and green sprouts    (if there are any) are facing up.   Add just enough water to cover the bottom of the    garlic and put the container in a sunny spot.  Change the water if it gets cloudy, and add water to keep the bottom of the bulb wet.  Use scissors to harvest the shoots after they get  about 3 inches long. The bottoms of the garlic will eventually send down roots and green shoots should grow well for a couple of months.

Chocolate Chip Muffins

1 stick butter or margarine

2 eggs

1 c. milk

2 cups all-purpose flour

¾ c. packed brown sugar

1 T. baking powder

1 t. salt

½ c. semisweet chocolate chips

Heat oven to 400 degrees F.  Grease bottoms of muffin cups in a 12-cup pan.

In a small bowl, cover butter or margarine with waxed paper and microwave on high for 30-45 seconds (or until melted).  Let the margarine cool 5 minutes.

Crack the eggs into a medium bowl, and then add the butter and milk.  Beat mixture with a fork until mixed well.

In a separate medium bowl, mix together all the “dry” ingredients:  the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt.  Stir until mixed.

Add the “wet” ingredients to the “dry” ingredients.  Stir just until the flour is wet.  The batter will be lumpy.

Stir the chocolate chips into the batter.

Spoon the batter into each muffin cup until it is about 2/3 full. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Perfect muffins: Muffins are “perfect” if they are light and tender with rounded, pebbly (or bumpy) tops.  The crusts are golden brown.  If you open the muffin, it has fine, even holes.

Water Fun Fact

The water on Earth is constantly being recycled.  The water from your faucet could contain molecules that the dinosaurs drank!

Earth Day is always celebrated on April 22.  People have been celebrating Earth Day since 1970!

Here are some ways that you can celebrate Earth Day!

· Save energy — Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

· Save trees — Use a lunchbox not a paper bag.

· Use both sides of a piece of paper when writing, drawing, or coloring.

· Plant a tree or a garden.

· Save water — Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.

· Never litter; always recycle!

· Be kind to animals — Build a birdhouse or bird feeder.

· Be friendly to the earth — Teach others to keep Kentucky clean and green

Celebrate EARTH MONTH in April!

Photography Tip

When taking pictures of landscapes, try not to have power lines and power poles in your photographs!

Plant a tree this month to celebrate Arbor Day!

Happy Spring!
